Today, malls are big business in many countries around the world. The situation is no different in Brazil. Many like shopping malls because they encourage family and communal bonding. Additionally, they are the true definition of a one-stop-shop. All sorts of products and services are found within the precincts of malls. Consequently, it is highly commendable that Brazilian entrepreneurs, Roberto Santiago had the foresight to develop a mall close to three decades ago. Located in the city of Joao Pessoa, the mall still holds the title of the largest mall in the state of Paraiba.
Roberto Santiago has always been an entrepreneur at heart. While the Business Administration graduate from the University Center of Joao Pessoa briefly worked at Café Santa Rosa, he soon realized that he was not cut out for employment. Soon after he founded his first business, Cartonnage.
Roberto Santiago decided to develop the Manaira shopping mall in 1987. That year, he purchased a prime plot of land in the city and commenced construction on the large facility soon after. The mall took a total of two years to construct and stood at over 100 thousand square meters. Owing to the dozens of shopping stores at the mall, it quickly became an attraction among Joao Pessoa’s residents owing to the versatility of products and services that it possessed. Since 1989, the mall has only been expanded on one occasion, in 2003, to add a new gourmet area.
Above all the Manaira shopping mall guarantees relaxation and entertainment. There is a wide range of entertainment options at the mall including a gaming area for children, a bowling alley, and about a dozen movie theatres. The movie theatres are particularly popular among the public as a few of them are exclusively 3D theatres. With these amenities and the large crowds that frequent the mall on a daily basis, any visitor is guaranteed unrelenting indoor entertainment.
Hungry? No problem, the Manaira shopping has a raft of eating options. Like most other malls on the planet, it features a food court stocked with numerous affordable meal options. However, the mall also differs from others in that it has a broader array of dining options, including fine-dining restaurants and a very popular gourmet area opened in 2014.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Roberto has built on his success with the Manaira shopping mall to expand his business interests. Today, he runs a number of other business in different sectors including entertainment and real estate. His biggest investment in recent years, however, is another mall – the Mangabeira shopping mall. Also located in Joao Pessoa, this second mall was completed in 2013 and is already considered one of the busiest in the city.
